Nicospan and Coir Rolls – Case Study

Project:  Grand Union Canal – Slough Arm dredge, bank & tow path repairs

Client: Canal and River Trust

Contractor: Land & Water Services Ltd

As the Canal & River Trust’s sole UK’s dredging contractor, Land & Water Services were instructed to dredge and repair a 500 metre stretch of the Grand Union Canal along part of the Slough Arm which travels in a fairly straight line from the Cowley Peachey Junction into Slough terminating by Stoke Poges.

Terraqua supplied Nicospan for a vertical bank repair c/w all associated products including; P15 geotextile, FSC softwood posts, Galv steel tying wire & staples.

Unplanted coir rolls were also supplied and installed; the canal & river trust’s volunteer group will plant the coir rolls in the spring time of 2015 with marginal plant plugs supplied from Terraqua’s Kingfisher Nursery.

The tow path was to be fully repaired; timber posts, timber edgings & geotextile were supplied to undertake the work.

Nicospan is installed with the front line of posts in place, the tow paths timber edgings are installed.

The Nicospan is fully installed; the back posts are in place & tied to the front posts with galv steel tying wire, helping to stabilise the system.  The geotextile is in place and the works are ready to except the silt dredging from the canal. A stone sub-base is laid over a woven geotextile along the length of the tow path.

The bank is now back-filled with the dredged silts from the canal, the un-planted coir rolls are fully installed and the tow path installed awaiting a top course to finish off the works.

When installed correctly the Nicospan erosion control system will provide a stabilised canal, river or lake bank for a 25 year plus period, established vegetation will add further stabilisation to the works.
